Cops Brace For Storm Accidents

It seems that no matter how many warnings are issued, the same thing happens every time we're hit with a major snowfall.  Unprepared motorists drive too fast in less than ideal conditions, and hundreds of accidents leave police and emergency crews scrambling to keep up.

The O.P.P. expect much of the same when Toronto gets walloped on Friday.

"Conditions of course in this snow as we're expecting are going to be changing minute by minute, and, again, all drivers are responsible for keeping their cars in perfect control," warns Cst. Graham Williamson.

With more than 10 centimetres in the forecast, getting from point "A" to point "B" may be a challenge. As a precaution the O.P.P. is adding extra officers to monitor the roads.

"We're mostly looking for drivers who are driving in an aggressive manner, driving in a manner which of course is unsafe for the weather conditions, and any driver who is exceeding the speed limit," explains Williamson.

The C.A.A. will also be busy. It expects to get 5,000 calls from distressed drivers.  They're also warning motorists to be prepared for anything.

"You never know when you're going to be stranded in the situation where there's a multi-car pileup and you can't go anywhere and you can't get any heat in your vehicle. Blankets do go a long way," said the C.A.A.'s Edyta Zdancewicz.
