Autopsy Results Reveal How Murdered Mother & Daughter Died

A plethora of questions continue to weigh heavily on police as the investigation into an apparent double murder-suicide in East York continued on Monday with the autopsies of two victims.

Kumar Thayakumar called 911 at about 3:30am Sunday to say that he'd killed his wife and daughter and was about to end his own life. When police arrived at the scene, an apartment building on Sunrise Ave. where the man's in-laws reportedly lived, they found the 40-year-old's body beside garbage containers in a parking area.

"The caller indicated that he'd just killed his wife and his daughter and that he was about to take his own life," confirms Det. Sgt. Peter Callaghan.

At about the same time police investigators found the bodies of the man's wife Malini  and daughter Neruuya  at the family home - a townhouse on Wakunda Pl. near Victoria Park Ave. and Eglinton Ave. - a few blocks away.

Malini, 36, had suffered signs of obvious trauma to her body, and the autopsy confirmed that she died from neck wounds, while the ill-fated teen expired from pressure on the neck.

Her two sisters, aged 9 and 12, were discovered unharmed inside the house. Police removed them from the scene so they wouldn't have to see the bodies of their older sister and mother. They were said to have been completely unaware of what had apparently occurred inside the residence.

"They are both in good condition," adds Callaghan.   "They were completely unaware of what had taken place in the home. They were asleep at the time the officers arrived. They were wakened and removed from the house before they could see what had taken place."

The province's Special Investigations Unit is now involved because Thayakumar called the cops before plunging to his death from the ninth floor unit, reportedly as his wife's horrified parents looked on.

"I don't know that we'll ever know why she (the deceased daughter) was chosen and why the other two were left alone," he added.

Those who knew the family suggested the father was prone to paranoia and had a history of mental problems.

"Why it's happened because of the sickness," said family friend Guru Nathan.

"I told him, 'Go for temple and pray.'"

Meanwhile, a Markham man has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of his wife.

The body of Thayalini Subramaniam, 31, was found Saturday morning in the garage of the couple's Kruger Rd. home. She had just come home from work. Investigators are hoping an autopsy will help determine the cause of death.

Murder suspect Sugirthanraja Kailayapilai, 39, had a court appearance in Newmarket Sunday.

The two are recent Tamil immigrants.
