"Glittering Gun" Offered As Bizarre Christmas Tree Ornament

O.K., that last one may seem out of place. But in at least one North American chain, it appears to be inextricably linked with the holiday season.

A store called Urban Outfitters is selling a Christmas ornament called the glittering gun. It's just what its name implies - something you hang on your tree to celebrate the season.

Given Toronto's recent gun backlash and the fact all three levels of government were here Thursday trying to tighten penalties against firearm crimes, many are wondering if it's appropriate.

"What the hell?" asked a student named Jeanette when confronted with the sparkling adornment.

Another would never think of buying it. "On my tree, no," Brent McKenzie notes dryly. "I can picture it being on 50 Cent's tree or Puff Daddy."

The Toronto location of Urban Outfitters refused to comment on the controversial bauble but the company's Philadelphia head office was more than willing to defend the product.

"The gun ornament is by no means condoning the violence that we face in our city or any other city and it is not meant to celebrate guns or gun violence," a statement reads. "It is meant only to ironically celebrate the holidays."

Its website advertises the product as allowing Xmas revelers to "bust a cap" in their trees this year.

That doesn't amuse gun control advocates like Wendy Cukier.

"It is a bit ironic that Christmas, which is supposed to be about peace and love, would be celebrated by hanging toy guns on your tree. I've just spent too much time with the victims of gun violence to find it very funny."

And while the company contends the entire idea is based on irony and many would never allow it into their house, there's a telling ending to this story: the local outlet here admits it's almost completely sold out of them.
