But that tragedy had a far different ending.

It began when a man later identified as Alnoor Amarsi was seen struggling with a child over the highway at Don Mills Road on the night of March 6, 2005.

As motorists and spectators watched in horror, the man dropped his young daughter Inara off the overpass and down to the pavement  - and the oncoming traffic - below.

He then hopped over the railing and jumped to his death.

Those watching the terrifying spectacle unfold couldn't believe their eyes.

"There was a guy holding a child over the rail, and it all happened so quickly," Daren Deonarine recalled. "Just as my car was to go under the bridge, we saw the two -- well, the girl came first. She fell right in the middle express lane, and the adult male came just maybe a second after."

Amarsi was holding a cell phone in one hand, torturing his wife with the knowledge of what he was about to do. Seconds later, he made his grim pledge come true.

Police later discovered the couple had been involved in a bitter break-up and the father had decided to take the worst revenge possible.

The pair was separated but still living in the same apartment building on different floors. She was taking him to court to seek support payments.

It was an arrangement he apparently couldn't live with and whatever love he once felt for the woman he married had turned into an insane and blind hatred.

But in the end, he failed. While he lost his own life in the attempt, against all odds little Inara somehow survived the 20 metre plunge and emerged with some serious internal injuries that kept her on a ventilator for several days.

"There was movement in the kid, so everybody's attention was drawn to the kid," Deonarine remembered. "So we yelled up at the cops she's breathing! She's alive! I even backed up blankets from my kit to cover the child. She was wearing a jacket but she was still cold, you know, shivering."

Incredibly, the five-year-old she was able to leave hospital on March 23rd - less than three weeks after her father tried to kill her. Doctors said at the time they expected her to make a full recovery.
