T.T.C. Back In Service Even Though Worker Issues Persist

Rude riders are the target of new TTC policies that will see you paying – literally – for breaches of proper etiquette.

The new fines came into effect on Monday October 12.

The rules were already in place, but now there’s a cash penalty for a variety of offenses.

"We need to have an enforcement tool to really drive the message home and hopefully act as a deterrent," TTC spokesman Brad Ross said Monday.

You could get charged for smoking on TTC property, putting your feet on the seats and blocking doors.

People who refuse to give priority seating to those who need it will also be forced to pony up.

After a grace period that began in January, Toronto Transit constables will issue tickets rather than warnings.

Light up in a station? You’ll be paying $195, plus an extra $35 that the agency is calling a “victim surcharge.”

Use a fake pass? Prepare to dole out a whopping $345, plus a $75 victim surcharge.

Last year, the Transit Commission collected about $600,000 in fines.

"It sounds like the city's trying to raise some money," countered rider Amy Tompkins.
