Prime Minister Stephen Harper knows something of what Barack Obama was feeling on Tuesday. Less than a month ago, he'd been returned to office in Canada, although hardly with such an overwhelming majority vote.
Canada has a lot to wonder about the new president-elect. How will he handle the North American Free Trade Agreement, border security, energy woes, the struggling economy and battles over natural resources?
And what about the fundamental differences between both men? One is a liberal Democrat some opponents have likened to a socialist. The other is a staunch conservative.
The two will certainly get together but can the twain ever really meet?
Canada's relationship with the U.S. under the new regime has yet to be determined but for now, Ottawa is making all the right noises about getting along with the new occupant of the White House.
Here's the official statement from Stephen Harper.
"On behalf of the Government and the people of Canada, I want to congratulate Senator Barack Obama for his victory in tonight's United States Presidential Election.
"I look forward to meeting with the President-elect so that we can continue to strengthen the special bond that exists between Canada and the United States.
"In the weeks and months ahead Canadian officials and diplomats will be working closely with members of President-elect Obama's transition team. Ministers in our government look forward to building a strong working relationship with their counterparts in a new Obama cabinet.
"I would also like to congratulate all incoming Members of Congress and Governors. Given the challenges facing the world economy, it is vital that Canadian and American legislators continue to work together on the important issues facing families on both sides of the border."
