A major weather system heading our way that is dumping heavy snow on parts of the United States may have raised your hopes for a white Christmas, but it looks as though the holiday will be a soggy, not a snowy, one for the GTA.

That system is expected to drop about 30 cm of snow in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area Thursday before it starts heading toward Ontario. The GTA won’t see snow, though, as mild temperatures forecast for Christmas day will mean rain, heavy at times, moving in around 2pm.

"The timeline of this system is fantastic for us in terms of those driving or travelling Christmas Eve or into Christmas Day," BT Weather Specialist Frank Ferragine explained Thursday.

The precipitation is expected to continue through to Boxing Day when it could turn into a rain-snow mix and there could be pockets of freezing rain.

But it’ll be a much different story in northwestern Ontario where forecasters are predicting between 10 and 20 cm of snow in the area near the Manitoba border by Christmas morning.

So which city will have the whitest Christmas in Canada this year?

According to Environment Canada, it’s Ottawa, which has 32 cm on the ground, making it snowier than Quebec City, Montreal, Winnipeg, Edmonton and the North Pole.
