Five top staff members from the Toronto Humane Society were scheduled to appear in court Monday, but the case has been put over until February.

They are facing animal cruelty charges, a month and a half after the shocking raid at the River Street shelter.

Former THS president Tim Trow, general manager Gary McCracken; head veterinarian Dr. Steve Sheridan, and senior managers Andy Bechtel and Romeo Bernadino were arrested on Nov. 26 when the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals raided and took control of the River Street shelter.

The five men were charged with animal cruelty and obstructing a peace officer.

Other staff members were allowed back into the shelter for the first time late last month, as the Ontario SPCA maintained control over the facility.

Last Thursday the Ontario SPCA announced two more arrests, just four days after the THS opened its doors to the public for the first time after the raid.

Trevor “Tre” Smith, a former agent and well-known face of the THS, has been charged with two counts of impersonating a peace officer and one count of perjury.

Ontario SPCA agent Mark Beauchamp has also been charged with obstruction of a peace officer.

The charges against Smith stem from a June 3, 2009 incident in which Smith allegedly acted in an enforcement role as an Ontario SPCA peace officer, despite the fact the THS's  affiliate status had been suspended, as had Smith's peace officer status.

Beauchamp, for his part, is accused of informing staff at the Humane Society of an upcoming inspection.
