Worst Las Vegas Snowstorm In Three Decades Has Tourists Talking

Normally what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. And the last thing you might bet on in the gambling capital of the world is a raging snow storm. But that's just what mostly disappointed tourists and residents of the Sin City were dealing with on Thursday, after a freak disturbance hit the desert community.

At least 9 centimetres came down in the area, the most flakes those folks have seen in three decades.

It may not be much to winter hardened GTA denizens but it was enough to close the city's airport and lead to the cancellation of all flights in and out of the strip.

Some freeways were also shut down as the neon heaven found itself unable to cope with the sudden snow.

The storm also dumped flakes on parts of California, including Malibu, which is known more for its white sand than its white snow.

While many tourists expressed dismay at the turn of events, others were excited, posing for pictures in parkas in front of the famed Welcome To Fabulous Las Vegas sign (top left).

For those heading that way on Christmas break, the forecast calls for improving conditions, although the nights will be below freezing.

Highs on Friday should be near 7C and get closer to the low double digits on the weekend.

And as for those of us staying home? We'll be getting our own taste of this Vegas vexer. The same storm that gave them all those flakes is heading our way for Friday.
