Weekend Change: One Day Of Summer To Be Followed By A Cooler & Rainy Sunday

So much for the perfect stretch of summer-like weather that we haven't seen since last September. It turns out we'll have to wait a little longer to match that four day stretch of plus-20 degree warmth set seven months ago.

A change in the forecast for Sunday is expected to put a damper on what was hoped to be the best weekend of the year so far.

It started Friday afternoon, when readings hit just over 20C and thousands of people ventured outside to take advantage of what turned into a mostly sunny and pleasant day.

"It's gorgeous. I just came down here to purposely sit out in the sun," one woman at Dundas Square relates.

"Yesterday I was wearing a sweater and freezing and now today it's sunny, it's beautiful out, I can take a tan," marvels another.

Some people were enjoying the outdoors but only on their way to something inside. "I'm meeting some friends down at an Irish pub," a man explains. "And we're going to do our twice a year drink-all-afternoon-have-a-whale-of-a-time afternoon. So we're not going to be out in the sun, I'm afraid."

Saturday will be a nearly perfect day, with summer-like highs near 26C and sunshine most of the day. The humidity will make it feel closer to 30, the UV will be high and the air quality might be on the poor side.

That moist, unstable air mass and the sudden heat are likely to lead to some violent thunderstorms at night, bringing the possibility of heavy downpours, high winds and even hail.

And then comes Sunday, which forecast models had suggested would be another perfect day with more mid-20 readings. But it now appears a front slipping down from the north will reach the GTA after all, triggering more rain and depressing temperatures - and summer lovers. Highs are now likely to only reach 15C.

Things rebound on Monday, with another 24C day, before reality returns, with more showers on Tuesday and cooler temperatures the rest of the week.

So enjoy the tease on Saturday. It's a nice summer preview that will eventually be here every day - just not quite yet.
