His sister was deported to Mexico and now 18 year old Toronto high school student Daniel Garcia is hoping he avoids the same fate.
Garcia came to Canada in 2007 fleeing violence and threats he claims to have suffered in his native Mexico. Both he and his sister Brenda made failed claims for refugee status.
Brenda Garcia was deported Monday. She’s a lesbian and said she and her brother were the victims of repeated acts of violence fuelled by homophobia. Brenda Garcia’s partner was shot to death four years ago, according to a report in the Toronto Star.
Daniel Garcia has been held at a detention centre since Thursday and his case was reviewed at a hearing Tuesday morning. He was ordered to remain in custody until his next hearing.
