A local coyote is living up to the species' wily reputation, outsmarting the city and managing to evade capture in the Beach.
"I don't think they are going to have much luck catching him because he is very, very smart," revealed Carole Howlett.
Animal control workers began using nets after box traps failed to work. But it doesn't help that people still seem to be feeding the animal.
Ian Collier lives on
Neville Park Boulevard, where the coyote
killed a Chihuahua last year. He said he saw the animal walk right past the net as three animal control workers stood by.
"He ran down, looked at them, and then kept going," Collier described. "I can't see any way this is going to fool the coyote."
Torontonian Irene Allan thinks the city needs to be more practical.
"If it was any other community, they would just shoot it. Sometimes that has to happen," she suggested. "Animal control and the trapper they hired tried really hard to scare the animal. It just won't go away. It's not afraid of people."
The city does not want to euthanize the coyote. It would rather capture the animal and relocate it to a safer area.
