Final Images Of Best Friends Released A Year After Their Motiveless Murder

There is still no end to the grief, there is still no end to the anger and there is still no end to the mystery.

One year after two young Toronto residents were shot to death in cold blood as they sat in their SUV, police have no motive for their shocking murders. Detectives have revised their theories about what triggered the killing of 25-year-olds Dylan Ellis and Oliver Martin on June 13, 2008, as they sat in their car parked on Walnut Ave. near Richmond St. W.

They'd just finished watching a basketball playoff game at a friend's house and had reached Bathurst and Queen Sts. But a phone call asking them to return and drop off a set of keys they'd mistakenly taken with them caused them to drive back to the area.

Martin, who was sitting in the passenger side of the SUV, was apparently going to throw the keys out the window to a friend as the vehicle sat waiting at the corner.

One of them called up to the apartment to say they'd returned. They were laughing and joking and Martin's girlfriend - who was in the back seat - snapped what turned out be the final photo of the two best friends together (top left).

It was taken about three minutes before someone with a gun emerged from the darkness, came out in front of the van and fired at the two men inside.
