People in the city have long complained about our neglected waterfront - a picturesque area that, despite cultural draws like the Harbourfront Centre, is virtually cut off from the rest of the city by an aging thoroughfare.

Little by little, that stretch along Lake Ontario, is showing signs of renewal. The HtO Park, with its lively yellow umbrellas, is a perfect example.

On Friday, a ribbon-cutting ceremony revealed the newest addition to the central waterfront at Queens Quay and Lower Simcoe St. It's a curvy walkway that resembles the waves of the water and is inspired by the shorelines of the Great Lakes.

A wave deck is already in place at Spadina. And a third will be constructed next year at Rees St.

The group overseeing the area's revitalization says the new project, which cost $6 million, will help make the waterfront one of the best in the world.

"It opens up the waterfront to people. Before, we had this narrow sidewalk crumbling away, and now we've got this spectacular space. People can climb on it, walk on it, perform on it, sing on it and enjoy the water on this beautiful Toronto summer that starts today," enthused Waterfront Toronto chair, Mark Wilson.

Most of those checking out the wavy walkway were impressed.

"I think it's fabulous, they did a great job," one passer-by noted.

And another enthused, "It's amazing to see more adventurous design."
