Tip From Homeless Shelter Leads Police To Fatal Stabbing Victim

Toronto Police were alerted to the city's 22nd murder of the year by an unusual source: the suspect himself.

Investigators have a 23-year-old man in custody in connection with the death of a 73-year-old man. His name has not been released.

The victim was found in his apartment at 85 Emmett Ave, near Scarlett Rd. and Eglinton Ave., on Tuesday. He had been stabbed multiple times.

Residents report that the elderly man had lived in the building for about 30 years and kept to himself.

The suspect allegedly made his confession to a priest, who convinced the man to contact police. The call came from the Good Shepherd Mission, a homeless shelter in the city's downtown.

By about 11am, a large number of police officers were seen collecting evidence both inside and outside the victim's building.

What could be key pieces of evidence were being marked with large yellow numbers, including a cell phone lying on the front lawn of the complex.

There's no word yet on a motive.

David Fitzpatrick, 23, of no fixed address, has been charged with Second Degree Murder.
