Dozens Protest Animal Suffering At Humane Society

Protesters gathered in front of the embattled Toronto Humane Society Saturday calling for the resignation of the entire board.

The animal shelter is being investigated by the OSPCA over accusations it has allowed the unnecessary suffering of animals.

Pictures have surfaced, allegedly of animals living in unsanitary conditions inside the shelter. The main concern is that terminally ill animals are being left to die a slow, painful death.

"Animals are found dead in their cages on a regular basis. There is no mercy at the Humane Society for these animals," contends former THS worker Marcie Laking.

The OSPCA has suspended the shelter's affiliate status until the investigation is complete.

The shelter cares for about 10,000 animals a year and stands by its commitment to euthanize only as a last resort.
