Officials Probe Cause Of Suspicious Mississauga Fire

A suspicious fire that destroyed 60 townhomes under construction in Peel Region was the result of arson, police said Thursday.

Flames first emerged from the Burnhamthorpe Road East site around 11pm on June 29. By the time crews arrived several units were already engulfed.

The damage is pegged somewhere in the range of $10 million. The same site experienced a serious fire, believed to be arson-related, in February.

An ensuing investigation by the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office and Peel Police revealed the cause was arson again and cops are asking the public for assistance in identifying a suspect they say entered the construction site sometime between 8pm and 10:30pm to set the fire.

The following photos of said suspect were released Thursday.

Police would also like to identify a potential witness who may have seen the suspect just before the fire was set. That individual was operating an "Ice-Cream" truck on Pagehurst Avenue and in the parking lot of adjacent Saints Martha and Mary Church.

Anyone with information should contact 12 Division's Criminal Investigations Bureau at 905 453-2121, ext. 1233 or Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
