Careless Smoking Blamed For Three-Alarm Fire Near High Park

Careless smoking is being blamed after a three-alarm fire broke out near High Park on Monday evening.

Fire officials explained that a homeowner was cooking in his backyard at 79 Fermanagh Ave. moments before the blaze began.

"After he had finished barbecuing, he flicked his cigarette underneath the veranda, where he started some combustibles: leaves and twigs," alleged Toronto Fire Acting Platoon Chief Greg Milani.

"This eventually caught the porch area on fire, spread to the neighbouring house next door, and also spread to the other house on the other side."

Luckily, no one was hurt in the blaze, though three homes were burned. The cost of the damages is estimated at one million dollars.

Meanwhile, a cat is believed responsible for another fire Monday night - just blocks away.

Investigators suspect that the feline knocked over a candle onto a mattress in a basement apartment on Boustead Avenue - merely two kilometres from the fire on Fermanagh.

It happened around 11pm and crews arrived quickly on scene.

They were able to contain the fire and only the basement was damaged.

The lone occupant was treated for burns to his arm.

But the cat wasn't hurt.
