An organization that claims to help Canadians in need of organ transplants has had its charitable registration revoked.

An audit of the Kitchener, Ont.-based Organ Donation and Transplant Association of Canada found the organization was spending more money on fundraising and administration than on its stated charitable mission.

The Canada Revenue Agency claims the group received $1.8 million in cash donations and spent $1.3 million of that on fundraising and administration. The CRA alleges only $447,000, or 25 per cent, was actually spent on charitable activities.

The federal agency also claims the group “participated in an international donation arrangement designed to disguise this lack of activity by artificially inflating the ratio of fund spent on charitable activities.”

The Organ Donation and Transplant Association of Canada is no longer allowed to issue donation receipts for income tax purposes and is no longer exempt from income tax unless it qualifies as a non-profit organization.

The group’s website is no longer operational and its offices are reportedly closed.
