TTC Drivers Hope To Get Protection From New Partitions

Reported assaults on TTC operators are all too common, and the commission is hoping new measures will steadily curb that trend.

According to the TTC, at least one operator reports an attack every day, claiming that until now they've been sitting ducks.

"I've had hand-print bruises, I've had a swollen face, a black eye," recalls driver Paddi Ervin of her many attacks. "At that point there was nothing to help."

The clear shields, which partition drivers from riders, cost the TTC $5.2 million and come with the option of being opened up for drivers who don't want to be separated.

They're already installed on more than 600 buses and will soon be rolled out to streetcars, though not in an identical manner.
