Toronto's central communities are surrounded by hundreds of thousands of other GTA residents, and the city's reach stretches well into the 905 area code.

Soon, so could its subway line.

In the not-to-distant future it could be possible to take TTC subways as far north of the city as Vaughan, and Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty are expected to make an announcement regarding cash for the extension in the upcoming week.

And once they do, what are now empty fields could start to become the site of the Vaughan subway station.

Right now getting that far requires TTC riders to head to Downsview station, before getting on a York Region bus that costs an additional $2.75.

But with a subway line in place, people heading to the area wouldn't just be saving money, they'd be saving time.

"It would make everything a lot easier," said student commuter Michelle Madl.

"I couldn't even imagine."

This is hardly the first mention of a major subway extension north. Talk of running the subway line up to York University and beyond to Highway 7 has been buzzing for years, though it may finally be nearing reality.

"The federal government is sort of the missing piece in the pie and now they've come up with the funding and we're absolutely thrilled," said Vaughan Mayor Linda Jackson.

Next week's expected announcement also has money earmarked for expanding transit in Mississauga, Brampton, York and Durham regions, as well as an expansion of the continually-clogged Highway 7.
