TTC Ads Blame Riders For Subway Delays

You get on the subway and it doesn't move.

You wait on a platform but the train seems to be taking forever.

You sit in a car stopped in a tunnel for what seems like an eternity.

If it's happened to you, you're a regular subway rider. And according to the TTC, you're something else - the cause.

The Red Rocket has launched an advertising campaign in subway stations that illustrates the five major reasons the system gets bogged down.

One is people charging the doors. Another is someone keeping them from closing. People not 'minding the gap' is a third. Fires caused by litter on the third rail is the fourth reason. And last, but by no means least, passenger illness rounds out the list.

Most riders resent the implication that they're at fault.

"Since they're serving us, like, it's not really our responsibility to make sure that they're on time," complains Angie Tong.

"It does seem to put the onus upon passengers, that they are the reason for delays," agrees Steve Kelly.

The TTC launched the campaign because it calculated it lost 13,500 minutes in 2006, up from about 12,800 the year before. And the Commission insists it's not blame they're doling out.

"What we're actually trying to do is ask for their help," explains spokesperson Alice Smith. "Help us in helping reduce delays, and their actions can certainly go a long ways towards that."

At least one accepts the accusation. "I think it is our fault," muses Martha Coates. "We are irresponsible and we don't follow the rules."

But the TTC acknowledges it's not perfect. It admits some 8,000 lost service minutes last year were caused by its own mechanical difficulties or other problems. And it has a big stake in minding that gap.
