More Police Cameras Going Up Around Toronto

Closed circuit police cameras are making a return to city, and this time they won't just be downtown.

Five cameras have been put up throughout the Entertainment District, but police will also be keeping a watch on some high crime residential areas.

The cameras are part of a six-month long police pilot project.

Along with the Ent. District, the eyes in the sky will also be permanently opened at Victoria Park and Finch, and in Malvern.

As usual, reaction has been mixed.

Ami Leuva thinks they're a good idea.

"It's good to have a camera," she remarks, "People get scared to do crime, at least they know the security camera is here."

"Even if you just go into the parking lot, there's a camera there. It's just for our protection."

But not everyone wants them.

"It's f****d up. Because they're invading our privacy," barked one angry opponent.

Police sources say the next neighbourhoods to get the cameras will be Jane and Finch, Regent Park, and Rexdale.

"Wherever the analysis tells us that violence is likely to take place...those are the areas we will use the technology," said police chief, Bill Blair.
