You'll need two things behind the wheel this weekend, a
map and a whole lot of patience. One of the city's main arteries,
The Don Valley Parkway, is closed for spring repairs.
The usually congested highway will be shut down in both directions from Highway 401 to the Gardiner starting Saturday at 2am until Monday at 5am. More than 200,000 vehicles use that stretch of road every day, so you can bet any alternative route will look more like a parking lot than a thoroughfare.
City crews are fixing the guardrails, re-painting some of the lines on the road as well as trimming trees along the stretch of pavement and replacing beams on the Bloor Viaduct.
But the DVP closure isn't the only roadblock in store for motorists. Thousands are expected to gather at Queen's Park on Saturday for the ninth annual
Global Marijuana March. Crowds will wind their way through Yonge and Bloor, then south to College before heading back to the legislature building for a rally. There's no word of any plans by
Toronto Police to weed out anyone taking a puff.
And if that wasn't enough to convince you to take advantage of public transit over the next couple of days, here's one more reason. Yonge St. will be a no car-zone for most of Sunday morning to make room for one of Toronto's first marathons of the year. The
10 km race will close the road from Lawrence Ave. to Adelaide from 5:30am to 11am.
