Students at an Oshawa high school are being warned against taking part in a cheeky cancer fundraising effort.
Bracelets emblazoned with the phrase “I love boobies” are being sold to raise money for breast cancer research and students wearing them at R.S. McLaughlin high school have been told to take them off or face suspension.
No suspensions have reportedly been handed down.
The
Durham District School Board says the language is inappropriate, but students disagree and think the humorous accessory is a good way to support cancer research.
Students at Sinclair Secondary School in Whitby and O’Neill Collegiate, also in Oshawa, have also been asked to remove items, including hats and T-shirts, emblazoned with the same slogan.
The “I love boobies” campaign is for the
American Keep a Breast Foundation and the slogan has stirred controversy south of the border, as well. The “boobies” bracelets have also been banned in several U.S. schools.
Last month, a federal court in Pennsylvania ruled the ban violated students’ right to free speech.
