A 62-year-old gas station attendant is fighting for his life in hospital after he was hit by a car while trying to stop a driver from stealing gasoline at a pump in Mississauga, police say.

The incident took place around 5 p.m. Thursday at a Petro Canada at Truscott Drive and Southdown Road.

Mechanic Faisal Khan called 911 after seeing the victim on the road, badly injured.

"He just went out just to tell this guy, come out and pay, that's all he did," he told CityNews.  "Whatever happened wasn't really acceptable to anyone."

Khan said the victim is married and has two grown children.

"(He's) a gentle fellow...just minded his own business and he was kind-hearted, there was no issues with him, he was just a straight forward person."

Police are still trying to track down the suspect, who is described as a black male, between 20 and 30 years old, driving a gold four door Sedan.

"We did get some surveillance from the gas station, we are still trying to extract any information, we are still having issues with that," admitted Cst. George Tudos, Peel Police.

"Theses kind of things happen, pump and runs, they are a common occurrence...but this instance is different because unfortunately one of the employees suffered very critical injuries."

If you saw what happened Thursday, call police at (905) 453-2121, ext. 3710 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
