On a beautiful Saturday evening in Toronto, a rare and dangerous situation developed just east of the downtown core. An abandoned building was determined to be on the verge of collapse after several people reported hearing the building crumbling. The structure is on Shuter near Jarvis. Shuter was closed between Jarvis and George after bricks started tumbling to the ground.
"Around 4:15 this afternoon we got a radio call for a building that was starting to collapse," said Toronto Police Sgt. Robin Dey. "The city was called in ... they have called in a demolition company ... to bring this building down in a safe manner."
The crew's expected to work into the night and has the full go-ahead to destroy the building. It's believed the building is a historical landmark roughly 150 years old but residents and those that know the area say it's been in rough condition for many years. It's believed to have been abandoned for about 25 years.
"I've worked in this division since 1992, and when I first came here in 1992 this building was in the exact same condition it was today," Dey added.
No one was evacuated from any of the neighbouring properties, and no injuries have been reported, though several people in the area were understandably scared.
"You could hear a big crash outside and I looked out the window and there was a big cloud of dust," said nearby resident Christine Mcavoy.
