He's the biggest mystery man in Toronto and police have officially upgraded him from a person of interest to a suspect in what has turned into a cold blooded murder. He's the man last seen entering and exiting an underground parking garage in the
Eglinton and Mt. Pleasant Road area on Friday afternoon. And homicide detectives think he's the man who shot and killed
66-year-old Glen Davis.
The millionaire philanthropist was gunned down in a building at 245 Eglinton Ave. East right before the long weekend. Cops continue to refuse to say what's changed their mind about the unknown stranger that's moved him to main suspect, but insist he's the man they think wielded the gun. And they're sure someone must have seen him, because he was hanging around the scene for at least half an hour before the crime, used a ramp to get into the garage that few would walk on and seemed generally "out of place".
"He has been captured on video surveillance entering the underground," explains
Det. Wayne Fowler. "He is also captured in the lobby area in the underground. Then also captured again shortly after the murder ... We were able to determine, this male has been loitering in the underground for an extended period of time."
"Obviously he is carrying a knapsack for a purpose," he adds. "He has a bulky coat on as well for a purpose."
Davis was known as a generous contributor to environmental causes, especially the World Wildlife Fund, and had just left a restaurant in the building when the shots rang out. But why he was targeted remains as mysterious as the man who killed him.
"I can't say if the motive was for robbery or something else, underlying," Fowler admits. "But it appears at this point Mr. Davis was selected for a crime ... We have a lot of follow-up to do in this investigation, into the background, businesses and associates of Mr. Davis. Also, we are all aware that he is involved in numerous charity groups throughout the city. So we have a large number of people who we have to speak with, in order to determine a motive in this crime."
Cops have released enhanced descriptions and several new videos of the suspect coming and going from the crime scene.
