It started as a three-year experiment way back in 1967. Forty years later, it's still GOing strong.

GO Transit started with a single rail line, and added bus service in 1970. Today, it's a massive commuter network that carries an average of 195,000 passengers every weekday. The forty-year anniversary was recognized with a ceremony at Union Station that featured comments by Ontario 's Minister of Transportation Donna Cansfield, and included video footage of the first GO Transit train trip from May 23, 1967 .

"I am honoured to be here to celebrate this milestone," Cansfield said. "The McGuinty government has made record investments in GO Transit. Since 2003, we have invested $1.8 billion in GO Transit, including $457 million this year, to improve and expand GO service for commuters."

The maiden voyage departed from Oakville station for Toronto 's Union Station and the service has since moved more than a billion passengers.

"It's wonderful to be able to thank all the people who have contributed to our success and continue to enhance our service," said Peter Smith, GO Chairman.

The system currently has 56 train stations and 14 bus terminals.
