A massive advertisement depicting a buxom bikini clad woman has angered local residents who say it not only distracts drivers, but is inappropriately located close to a school.
The ad, which hangs on the side of a
North York
highrise next to the
DVP, has not only attracted the awed attention of young students, but has also caught the eye and ire of city councillors, who have voted that the sign must be removed.
They say the ad company,
Strategic Media, has no permit and that safety trumps all arguments to keep the giant billboard.
"All of these high speed transactions are taking place all under the watchful eye of a 7-foot-tall bikini clad model on the side of an apartment building," said
Shelley Carroll, Don Valley East councillor.
"This is a sign that is just huge and it's there for no other reason but to grab drivers, and it's just too busy a junction in the highway to be grabbing your attention," she adds.
Drivers seem to agree that the woman in the ad can take their focus off the road.
"I would totally think that's a distraction, especially on the 401 and 404, especially at a hundred kilometres an hour, that could be quite a distraction," admits Fonz Verdoliva.
"If one of those kids is trying to cross the road and looking up at the fifty-foot-girl, what happens when another car hits them?"
So what are testosterone-flooded students saying about it?
As expected, many had a more tolerant attitude.
"
It's pretty sexy, I'm not gonna lie," one quipped.
"
It's nice, you come out of school every day and
Whoo!
That's how I feel about that poster."
