Police say a 15-year-old driver allegedly hit Const. Garrett Styles during a traffic stop east of Newmarket Tuesday morning.
Styles later died in hospital. The teen, whose identity hasn't been disclosed, sustained serious injuries in the crash and was taken to Sick Kids hospital where he remains in police custody.
Styles, 32, left behind his wife Melissa and their two small children -- a two-and-a-half year old daughter, and a nine-week-old son.
"When I got the call saying it was him and all I could think about was just his wife and his kids. I know he was devoted to them," Rob Dobbin, Styles' cousin, told CityNews.
At a news conference on Tuesday afternoon, York Regional Police Chief Eric Jolliffe said Styles had tried to pull over a Dodge Caravan around 5 a.m. on Highway 48 near Herald Road.
"While Styles was at the driver's door, the van accelerated. He was dragged 300 metres before the vehicle rolled, pinning Styles," Jolliffe said.
Styles was able to issue a distress call as he was pinned under the
vehicle. In a recording, Styles can be heard saying, "I gotta car on top of me, help!" A
dispatch later tried to reassure him that police and paramedics were on the
way.
"We might have some other people injured here, too, I dunno," Styles told the operator.
Styles was rushed to Southlake Hospital in Newmarket with critical injuries
where he passed away about an hour later. The York homicide unit is investigating. No charges have been laid.
Styles was a seven-year veteran of the force, and comes from a policing family. His father, retired Staff Sgt. Garry Styles, is a 33-year member of the force who just retired in January. Garrett Styles had recently written his sergeant exam, and passed with 82 per cent.
