Marijuana March Lights Up For Soggy 10th Anniversary

The day-long celebration of all things cannabis is perhaps a misnomer. After all, it's hard to imagine a large group of pot-smoking, freedom-loving, hacky sack-playing people really marching anywhere.

But take to the streets they did Saturday, extending a decade-old fight for their right to spark up. Whether it's for recreational or medical reasons, just depends on who you ask.

"I've been on disability for 10 years, costing taxpayers money just for my costs of living, and now I'm working because it (marijuana) has helped my health so much," proclaimed Rebecca Darylin.

The afternoon march took thousands of demonstrators from Queen's Park to Bloor, then east Yonge, south to Wellesley, and back to Queen's Park. Heavy rains may have curbed attendance slightly, but few seemed to care.

"The rain kept a few people away, but obviously not many," admitted Freedom Festival organizer Neve, while surveying the thousands on hand.

It's the 10th anniversary for the event, with similar strolls taking place in more than 200 other cities all across the globe. Other "world class" cities like Paris and London also took part, though Toronto's edition is reportedly the world's largest.
