The two-year-old son of Toronto's latest murder victim spent 12 hours alone in a Scarborough apartment with his mother’s body, police confirmed Saturday.
"I don't know what the child would have witnessed. The child is now with relatives," Det. Sgt. Graham Gibson said.
Shaher Bano Shahdady, 21, was found dead at 3131 Eglinton Ave. E, near Markham Road, around 5 p.m. on Friday, but she may have been dead for much longer.
Neighbours described hearing a loud fight coming from the sixth-floor unit on Thursday night, including a child screaming. Shahdady's parents didn't hear from her on Friday and went to check on their daughter in the evening. That's when they found her body, and their grandson.
"I heard a man crying and screaming. He told me, 'somebody killed my daughter,'" neighbour Jake Terveld said Saturday.
Shahdady's estranged husband has been charged with first-degree murder. Abdul Malik Rustam, 27, turned himself in to police on Saturday morning.
The cause of death is not yet known.
Toronto police are investigating, and have taken surveillance video from the apartment hallway.
It’s the city’s 26th murder of the year.
