The province’s Special Investigations Unit is has confirmed Toronto police were involved in a fatal shooting that killed one person and injured two others at Toronto’s Caribbean Carnival.
“So far, we’ve found out that shortly before 7 o’clock there was an interaction between Toronto police officers and a male on Lake Shore Road, during the Caribana festivities. At some point, there were firearms discharged,” said Frank Phillips, communications coordinator with the SIU.
A 30-year-old man was killed. A 21-year-old woman suffered multiple gunshot wounds. She's currently in critical condition in a local hospital.
A third man, 19-year-old Amrit Boodram, was grazed with a bullet, and sustained eye injuries.
“Scary, scary. I mean, he was obviously scared. Everybody thought the worst had happened,” Boodram’s cousin Sam Jagarnauth told CityNews.
The shooting has put festival security in the spotlight.
“We hired from five companies, 250 security officers to be there. Plus we had pay duty officers, paid police officers there,” said Caribbean Carnival spokesperson Christopher Alexander.
"You're supposed to come out here and you know, have fun, do your thing, and people are shooting - this is just ridiculous," said Scarborough resident Leah.
Investigators have closed Lake Shore Boulevard West between Strachan Avenue and Dufferin Street.
The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
