The family of Anthony Smalling, who died in a shooting in Etobicoke last Friday, alleges he was killed over a woman.

The family said Smalling was dating a woman and that her ex-boyfriend is the accused.

“When this monster took my son, he took my heart," Smalling's mother Marcia Welcome said. "Really, I have nothing to live for.  I'm more depressed.”

Juede Noel, 24, of Toronto, surrendered to police Wednesday at Toronto’s 22 division, and was charged with second-degree murder.

Emergency crews were called to the scene around 9:50 p.m. on Friday outside an apartment complex on Capri Road near The East Mall.

Smalling had suffered numerous gunshot wounds to the chest. He was rushed to hospital where he later died.

Noel appeared in court Thursday morning, and he was denied bail. His next court date will be Aug. 12.
