Heavy rain caused big problems Tuesday on several streets around the GTA, particularly in Vaughan.

York Regional Police said severe weather caused flooding and traffic light failures throughout the afternoon on Highway 7 at Edgeley Boulevard, near Highway 400, forcing a closure in the area.

The TTC had to divert its Keele North buses because of flooding at Rivermede and Bowes roads, north of Highway 7.

“The car stalled out, and after that the water went from four inches deep to, I don’t know, probably over a foot, foot-and-a-half,” TTC driver Gord Urbanski said.

“While it was flooding, I was terrified I wasn’t gonna get home,” said driver Andy Krcmar.

Police are warning parents to ensure children stay away from waterways because the flow will be heavier-than-normal due to the rainfall.

The rain caused serious flooding on Jane Street, near Steeles Avenue, and at Royal York Road and Dundas.

There was also flooding in the Highway 401 and Islington area, causing headaches for homeowners.

“The flowers are floating, the pictures are ruined and we just finished renovation. We were painting, there’s new floor and all the furniture is new – everything got damaged,” said homeowner Ansa Faruqui.

Toronto Fire also reported water problems in a handful of areas around the city, including Rexdale, Jane and Finch, St. Clair near O’Connor and near Finch and Midland avenues.

A tree and some power lines also came down in the Dovercourt and Dundas area around noon.

Toronto Hydro had also reported power outages in parts of the city, but electricity has been restored.

The wet weather may continue – forecasters say there’s a risk of thunderstorms Tuesday evening and Wednesday.

“The forecast was for 15-25 millimetres of rain, with locally higher amounts with embedded thunderstorms,” CityNews meteorologist Natasha Ramsahai said. “Parts of the north and east GTA got hit with those higher amounts from slow moving pockets of heavier rain.”
