New Moon Landing Footage Digitally Re-Mastered

"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." - Neil Armstrong

Those words became some of the most memorable in history and defined an era. Thirty-eight years later, people around the world still look to the stars and imagine what it would be like to walk on the moon.

And now, thanks to new technology, the original footage taken by astronauts Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin in 1969 has been turned into a high definition video, complete with sound.

With help from NASA, Canadian astronaut aficionado Robert Godwin used digital technology to transfer the 16mm film clips to high definition DVD and Blu-Ray Disc. He also took separate audio and synched it up to the video.

"What we have here is the first high-definition transfer of the first colour pictures taken on the moon," says Godwin.

The result is a fascinating sequence of scenes, including shots from the Lunar Module as it orbits the moon and of the astronauts walking around the airless surface. There are also more intimate moments inside the Command Module, such as Michael Collins shaving, that show the real people behind this historic event.

"We now can finally see these pictures almost as good as they actually are on the film," says Godwin.

Much of the footage has never been seen before and was re-mastered digitally earlier this year.
