York police have charged a man after two people were killed at a construction company in Schomberg on Tuesday morning.
Emergency crews were called to James Elliott Underground Construction on Lloydtown Aurora Road, west of Newmarket. A female employee called 911 around 10:25 a.m. after discovering James Wilson and William Allan Jones, both 76, suffering from serious head injuries.
One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene and one later died in hospital. Both men worked as mechanics at the business.
Police have charged Robert Abernethy, 47, of Schomberg, with two counts of second-degree murder.
The accused made a brief and bizarre court appearance on Wednesday. When asked his name he began reciting a string of numbers and then stood up and shouted, "my name is Chris."
He will remain behind bars.
"A motive will be examined through the investigation, through interviews that are being conducted with other workers and through the accused himself," said P.C. Rebecca Boyd.
In the meantime, family of James Wilson remembered him fondly.
"He was a good person, he wouldn't harm a fly," said his son, Scott Wilson. "He helped everyone."
"He laughed loud and he lived loud," added daughter Anna-May Wilson.
