GO Transit bus drivers and other workers were set to walk off the job next week, but the union has extended its strike deadline.
The Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1587 was poised to strike Sept. 19 after contract negotiations broke down. The ATU, which represents more than 1,500 bus drivers, coach technicians and station attendants, told CityNews it has extended its deadline.
A new deadline hasn’t been determined.
A job action would affect GO bus service, but trains would still run.
Wages are the main sticking point. The union claims GO will only offer its workers an increase if it comes out of existing benefit costs.
If the strike does happen, it would be the first-ever GO Transit strike involving ATU members.
ATU Local 1587 also represents workers who operate and maintain York Region Transit buses for Miller Transit and First Student Canada. They’re also ready to strike.
