A man died in hospital Friday of injuries he suffered in a Markham garage fire that also killed his wife.

Witnesses reported hearing and feeling an explosion before a fire erupted in the garage of a house on Kentland Street, near Markham Road and Major MacKenzie Drive, around 7 p.m. Thursday.

The 42-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene and her 48-year-old husband was rushed to Sunnybrook hospital in critical condition. Police confirmed Friday morning that he had died.

No names have been released.

Their two teenage children weren’t home at the time of the fire. The home itself suffered little damage -- most of the flames were contained in the garage.

"[The teens] are very friendly, they're amazing, they're always supportive," friend Piraveenah Kanagasabai said Friday.

"I'm really upset about it. I hope she's doing OK," she added.

York Regional Police homicide officers and investigators from the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office are trying to determine what caused the suspected explosion and fire.

Until a cause can be pinpointed, the fire is being considered suspicious.

If you have any information, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
