In a shocking incident Wednesday night, Toronto police tell CityNews a woman tried to light herself on fire after she was part of a multi-vehicle collision in the Bayview and Sheppard area.
Emergency crews were called to the scene around 6:30 p.m. for the collision, which police say involves anywhere from four to seven vehicles. There’s no word on what caused the crash.
“All I can say right now is that this collision is more than just a normal traffic collision,” said Sgt. Andrew Bator of Toronto police.
A male driver in his 50s was taken to Sunnybrook Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. Three other drivers were unharmed.
A woman involved in the crash fled the scene and ran into a nearby house on Foxwarren Drive, just off Bayview Avenue.
“She walked in, she saw me leaving the house to go to the garbage, and she opened the door and came in and was trying to set herself on fire,” said the homeowner, who asked not to be named.
“She had my stove on, with all the gas, and she was trying to ignite herself. So I stopped her, she spoke no words at all…Never saw her before in my life.”
She was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
“Paramedics did come and take her. And I hope she’s okay…It was very shocking, and I walked into a situation that I didn’t even know how safe I was,” said the homeowner.
Bayview Avenue from Sheppard Avenue north to Empress Avenue has been closed for the police investigation. Officials expect it to be closed for the next several hours.
