SIU probing death of man being investigated by police

The province’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) has been called in to probe an incident in which a man died while being investigated by Toronto Police officers this week.

The police watchdog said officers were tracking a man on Parliament Street, south of Dundas, just before 7 p.m. Thursday. The man was in medical distress and officers transported him to St. Michael’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Few details of the incident have been released.

The SIU has assigned five investigators and two forensic investigators to the case.

The civilian agency is called in to investigate incidents of death, serious injury or alleged sexual assault involving police officers.
