A 22-year-old man has been arrested five months after an alleged hit-and-run in Mississauga that claimed the life of a 62-year-old gas station attendant, Peel police say.

Petro Canada worker Hashem Atifeh Rad, a married father of two, was hit by a beige Nissan Altima car on May 19 while he was trying to stop the driver from allegedly stealing $75 worth of gas from a pump at Truscott Drive and Southdown Road.

He died in hospital on May 20.

After a five-month investigation, police arrested Abdullahi Mohamoud of Mississauga. He is facing four criminal charges, including failing to remain causing death, criminal negligence causing death, theft under $5,000 and breach of recognizance.

Mohamoud will appear in court Monday.

"Members of the public were instrumental in this investigation, including the many witnesses that came forward and the hundreds of Nissan Altima owners who were interviewed," Peel police said in a release.

“I think an arrest is not enough, until we get justice done,” said Rad’s co-worker, who didn’t want to be named.

Investigators recognized that many people were inconvenienced, and thanked them for their assistance.
