York Region transit workers slowed buses entering a transit yard in Vaughan Wednesday morning as they picketed for the first time since their strike began last month.

Picketers gathered at the Southwest Division facility, near Keele Street and Highway 7, around 6 a.m. And officials said the move was delaying all York Region Transit routes by at least an hour.

Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1587 president Ray Doyle says management is not willing to go to arbitration to end the dispute and no new talks have been scheduled.

He said his union may announce a new strategy later on Wednesday.

Some 600 bus drivers walked off the job on Oct. 24 over wages, benefits and the length of shifts.

The strike involves three private companies and two locals of the same union.

ATU Local 1587 represents First Canada and Miller Transit workers which together operate 80 routes in Newmarket, Aurora, Richmond Hill, Markham, Vaughan and elsewhere

ATU Local 113 represents employees of Veolia Transportation, which has a contract for five Viva bus routes in York Region.
