It seems that kilts are safe in the Durham Catholic School Board.
The board voted Monday night against bringing a motion to parents that would allow schools to ban students from wearing kilts.
A trustee with the board proposed the motion, saying hemlines on the skirts, which are part of the uniform, were creeping higher and higher.
“The uniform represents the students when they’re in the community as well. So if they’re in the community, and people only remember that girls wear short skirts when they go to that school, is that the image we want to convey?” said trustee Chris Leahy.
Durham isn’t the only board in Ontario to consider doing away with the kilt. Some schools in Toronto, Halton, Peterborough and Clarington have already gotten rid of the garment.
The possible ban in Durham region would have affected 4,500 female students.
