Nearly 400 criminal charges have been laid as part of Project Marvel, police said Wednesday during a news conference showing some of the firearms and cash seized in the Canada-wide raids a day earlier.
Supt. Chris White said a list of the accused and the 396 charges would be available shortly. Some of the 27 firearms and the $110,000 in cash seized were on display at 23 Division.
Police said there was more to come, with White saying “we have unfinished business,” and the investigation continues.
Early Tuesday, police executed 67 search warrants, including some in B.C., Alberta and other parts of Ontario, and charged 60 people including at least 10 who were underage.
Project Marvel began last May to investigate a street robbery and shooting in the city’s northwest end, and that led to the discovery of organized crime involving two gangs, the Young Buck Killas and the G-Siders, White said Tuesday.
As the investigation matured, police said the members of the two gangs were responsible for firearms and drug trafficking that spread across Canada to Calgary, Fort McMurray, Surrey, B.C., and other Ontario cities including Waterloo.
More than 900 police officers, including nearly 400 tactical officers, were involved in the Tuesday raids.
There were a handful of divisional commanders at the news conference, including 31 division's Dave McLeod, who told reporters that more officers would be in the affected communities so that the vacuum created by the arrests wouldn't be filled by other criminal groups.
