It was already
one of the biggest drug busts in RCMP history, but on Sunday authorities upped the estimated value of Ecstasy taken from a Finch and McCowan home from $20 to $40 million, all but removing any previous competition.
The Mounties and Toronto Police donned protective garb as they hauled the millions worth of drugs from the home just off of Finch between Brimley and McCowan. Amazingly, it was just last year that the same home was the site of a marijuana grow-op that was eventually raided by police.
This time the discovery was made after a vehicle stop nearby led police to a home on Pipers Green Ave. where the drugs were allegedly found. Five arrests were made, and the ensuing investigation appears to have international implications.
"I think it's comfortable to say that this investigation is crossing provincial and national borders," said RCMP Sgt. Brent Hill.
"Unfortunately we live in an age when synthetic drugs have become very popular among young people ... so we're going to find more and more of these situations."
Due in court Monday on drug charges are Yan Shi, 31, Wei Qion Ma, 29, Yao Quan Jian, 20 and Shu Qiang Wu, 37, of Toronto. Wan Shan Ling, 50, of Brooklyn, N.Y. is also facing charges.
