Accused In Random Knifings Due In Court

Torontonians can breathe a sigh of relief, as the suspect in a series of apparently random stabbings in the downtown has been arrested.

Farid Maronisi, 24, was charged with three counts of attempted murder and was in court Wednesday. He's the accused in Tuesday's bizarre attacks, which occurred within an hour of each other. The first attack happened at about 11:30am near Adelaide and Yonge Sts., where a 40-year-old man was grabbed by the neck and stabbed three times in the back.

The victim quickly called authorities as the assailant fled. About 15 minutes later, near Sherbourne and Queen Sts., two women were slashed in the face near a streetcar stop.

Two of the victims were treated at St. Michael's Hospital, while the third was treated on the scene and released. None of their injuries were considered serious.

There's no word on a motive for the stabbings. Video surveillance of the first attack was crucial to helping police nab the suspect, as someone recognized the individual and called them. A weapon was recovered in the course of the investigation.

Police were probing reports of a possible fourth victim late Tuesday.
