Man Stabbed Several Times With Screwdriver In "Bike Rage" Incident

Cyclists and motorists for the most part have learned to share Toronto's busy streets.  But occassionally the tense truce that exists between them boils over.  That's what happened on Friday when a man riding a bike got into a confrontation with a driver in an SUV.  The cyclist, who police believe is a courier, ended up pulling out a screwdriver and allegedly stabbing the motorist in the facial area six or seven times before fleeing on foot.

The incident took place at around 9:30am at the busy intersection of College and McCaul.

The occupant of the two-wheeler ran off down College toward University, leaving his bike behind.  Police loaded it into the back of a cruiser as evidence and began a search for the cyclist-turned-pedestrian, but so far there's no sign of him.

He's described as a white male in his 20s, with a goatee. He was last seen wearing a brown baseball cap and faded blue jeans.

The victim's injuries are said to be serious but not life threatening.

As far as the suspect's choice of weapon, police weren't too surprised.

"It happens. In my experience, anything basically can be used as a weapon and that just was the weapon of choice today," said Det. Trevor Searles.

"My advice to the public basically is to avoid any type of altercation while you're driving. We can't allow our tempers to get the best of us."
