A man in his 30s was shot to death inside a barbershop at Malvern Town Centre in Scarborough on Tuesday, Toronto police confirm.
Officers responded to a call for shots fired at 31 Tapscott Road just before 1 p.m.
They found the victim without vital signs inside Cut Creator barbershop
. CityNews has learned the victim is a longtime barber at the shop named Chris Thompson. Friends say Thompson, who was known as "Chrissy," was a father of two.
"He's a good guy, I don't understand what's going on in this world," said friend, Latoya. "It's just foolishness."
Police say the suspect used a shotgun, and it appears he targeted Thompson only. It's not known how many other people were in the barbershop at the time of the shooting.
Thompson has worked as a barber for the past 16 years.
"Police are still trying to determine what motivated the shooting and who may be responsible," Const. Tony Vella told CityNews. "We know there is at least one person involved, there may be more."
Police have no suspects in custody, but are questioning several potential witnesses.
The shooter is described as dark skinned, around 5'9", wearing dark clothing and possibly a mask.
The homicide squad has taken over the investigation and the mall's parking lot has been cordoned off. The K-9 unit has been searching a nearby wooded area for clues.
"There were a number of people in the area at the time and we are asking anyone who may have seen the incident.... We urge you to come forward and speak to officers," Vella said.
The barbershop killing marks the fifth homicide of the year in the GTA and the fourth fatal shooting in Scarborough over the past 30 days.
